Urban view of Piazza Castello with the Gate and the Tower, Vicenza, Bramante, Oil on canvas, unframed.

AUTHOR’S AND PAINTING’S NEWS:
The painting is part of a series, freshly made in 1958 by the famous Venetian painter at the Book Fair, representing some of the most important streets and squares of Vicenza (see listings QU26-QU27). Bramante, who signed so in honor of the homonym great Renaissance architect, wanted to do a tribute to his hometown. The work, painted in oils shows a corner of the central Piazza Castello, focal point of the city, with the ancient medieval tower in the center and the entrance to the Salvi Gardens on the left and shops and bars with their sign-boards on the right. In every part of the painting the artist’s brush strokes and quick touches of soft bristles, especially on the blue sky and in the details of the urban components.

La Divina Commedia
Old images on contemporary material, made with high tech production techniques and ancient crafts.
A project by Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe, 2008
In continuation of the project Godogan, designed for Friedman Gallery New York and Droog Design, Van Eijk & van der Lubbe designed a new series of products where old images meet high tech production techniques and in which ancient crafts are combined with contemporary materials.
Beginning of the 14th century, Dante Alighieri wrote the well known epic poem La Divina Commedia which is considered to be one of the greatest works of world literature. In this epic poem, Dante describes the Christian life after death, and this story can be seen as the medieval worldview of the western church. Although this might seem only a Christian story, Dante integrated the political struggles of that time. Still, the story of La Divina Commedia can be read as a nowadays critic on politics and translated into problems of society nowadays.
In the project La Divina Commedia of Van Eijk & van der Lubbe, different worlds meet as well. The Old illustrations of Gustav Doré, drawn in 1860 are known as the visuals of La Divina commedia of Dante. They have been reproduced in a high tech way by laser engraving on a contemporary material, polypropylene, and after that partially carved by craftsmen. It’s an estranged combination to have this story cut 3 dimensional in plastics. This way, it comes to live and on the same time it is put in the 21st century.
